Reduce the risk of mold with new vinyl windows

Mold is a common problem in homes throughout Canada and it's usually most noticeable during the colder months of the year. This is largely due to the fact that the temperatures outside differ so drastically from those inside your home and this results in condensation which, in turn, causes mold to develop. Once mold sets in, it can be incredibly difficult to get rid of. However, by taking the correct preventative measures, you can stop mold from appearing in the first place. In addition, even if you have already encountered mold, new vinyl windows can help you put an end to this problem.

Where does mold develop?

When your home is warm, and the outside is cold, the temperature difference causes the water particles in the air to condense and form droplets. If you have wooden windows, the wood can easily absorb the water and, over time, the wood will degrade, and mold will develop. Even walls that are regularly exposed to water and high levels of humidity can become a breeding ground for mold. Single-pane windows not only reduce energy efficiency but they are also far more likely to become a home for mold than double or triple-pane glass.

How can new windows help?

Vinyl windows do not absorb water which means that mold will not be able to invade your window frames. When you install new vinyl windows, you can choose between double and triple glazed options. This helps keep your home warmer in winter because it takes that much longer for the cold air outside to cool down the glass pane on the interior. Simply put, the exterior pane will need to get cold enough so that the air between that pane and the interior pain also gets just as cold. Only then can the temperature of the interior pane start to drop. Since your home is heated in the winter, the interior pane temperature will never get cold enough, and by keeping this pane at a reasonable temperature, you also help keep the temperature of the air or gas between the panes warmer than the temperature outside. Your new windows will also have new seals which help prevent air and water infiltration. In addition, these seals prevent moisture from entering the airspace between the two panes.

Extra helpful hints

Another great tip to remember is to keep your radiator or heater close to your windows in each room. By doing so, you will help keep the air around the window warm enough to prevent condensation from occurring.

When you are home, you will notice higher levels of humidity. This is largely due to the fact that our bodies release water when we breathe. As soon as you wake up in the morning, you should open the windows in your bedroom and make sure that you air your home every day to help lower humidity levels inside your home. Wipe down your windows and window sills if any water has formed overnight.

Northshield replaced 9 windows in our house. Our only complaint would be that the colour doesn't really match the sample we were shown. The woman we first encountered in the showroom was pleasant and helpful. There are only so many things she could tell us in the showroom but it was enough to convince us to book an appointment with a salesman. Walter, the fellow who came to our house, wasn't really a salesman at all and yet he knew exactly what he was doing. Answered all of our questions, clearly knew his business inside and out, was patient with us, made some really helpful suggestions, and just generally made us feel confident and comfortable. Next came Vladimir. He came to do the final measurements and to verify the details of each window. Another very very knowledgeable guy. Clearly an expert in his field and yet friendly and patient with us. The team of men who came to do the install were all very much polite and professional. Their workmanship is first rate. In the end, what I know is this, the new windows are in, the drafts and rattles from the old ones are gone, the price was fine, the quality is A1, and every single individual along our journey was a genuine pleasure to work with.
