Choosing the best spot for a new window

Whether building a new home or renovating your existing home, there are several important factors to consider. It's not just about planning the size of a room or your home, but also other issues like where certain fixtures and furniture will be. When choosing the perfect spot for your new window or windows, proper planning is essential. Consider how much space you have available and the implications of your choices. For example, a small window might not let in enough light or air. A large window, on the other hand, might limit your other design options. Here are some key points to consider when planning the perfect spot for your windows:

Style and interior décor

If you are planning on installing a new window in your living room, for instance, you might not want to place it right behind or opposite your TV. In the first case, your TV will block the window and, in the second instance, the light from the window will directly reflect and obscure the image of the TV. You might need to adjust the interior design in order to suit your new window placement. Alternatively, you might need to consider a different spot for the window.

Let in the light

Natural light is great way of keeping your energy bills down since you can maximize the power of nature and only use your household lights when really needed. If you want to make the most of it, you will need to make sure that the window you install is facing the best angle. It's also important to consider anything that may obstruct the sunlight like large trees and other nearby structures.

Enjoy the view

Once you have an idea of where you'd like to install the window, you should take a moment to explore the view that will go along with it. What's on the other side of the wall? Will you have a great street view? Will the window overlook the pool or patio area? What about that unattractive corner of your property? What if the window exposes something less than aesthetically pleasing? You could choose to install your window somewhere else or you could take the time to tidy up that part of your garden. If you want to enjoy the sunrise or sunset in a particular room, you will also need to make sure that your windows are facing the correct direction.

Exterior style

Your house does not only need to look great on the inside, but also on the outside. Your windows should be in line with one another. So, even if they are in different rooms, there should be some kind of consistency or your home won't have that perfect outside appearance. You might even choose different types of windows which means that they might not all be the same size. However, you can still make sure that they are installed at the same height. This is where a professional opinion and assistance will come in particularly handy!

Selling potential

Whenever you make any kind of renovations to your home, you should always keep the long-term benefits in mind. Making the right choices now will help you boost and maintain the value of your home. Imagine what will better attract future buyers should you wish to sell one day.

Extra features

Windows are so much more than just a way of letting in air and light. You could choose a bay or bow window with a window seat so that you can make the most of the view. These kinds of windows also open up the room so it will be more spacious than before!

Northshield replaced 9 windows in our house. Our only complaint would be that the colour doesn't really match the sample we were shown. The woman we first encountered in the showroom was pleasant and helpful. There are only so many things she could tell us in the showroom but it was enough to convince us to book an appointment with a salesman. Walter, the fellow who came to our house, wasn't really a salesman at all and yet he knew exactly what he was doing. Answered all of our questions, clearly knew his business inside and out, was patient with us, made some really helpful suggestions, and just generally made us feel confident and comfortable. Next came Vladimir. He came to do the final measurements and to verify the details of each window. Another very very knowledgeable guy. Clearly an expert in his field and yet friendly and patient with us. The team of men who came to do the install were all very much polite and professional. Their workmanship is first rate. In the end, what I know is this, the new windows are in, the drafts and rattles from the old ones are gone, the price was fine, the quality is A1, and every single individual along our journey was a genuine pleasure to work with.

We chose Northshield because of the rave reviews on Google, but unfortunately the experience was a disappointment. The sales guy was nice enough, but like most suppliers in their industry, installation came 6 weeks past their original estimate, which was fine since we were not in a big rush, although we had to delay the painting of our kitchen because of it. The two big issues were: 1. To install our new patio doors, the opening had to be widened, which our sales guy mentioned, and which was fine to us. The problem came when the installers were on site and insisted that they did not need to replace the header. I know nothing about construction but luckily my colleagues told me to make sure that they install a new header because they were widening the doorway. Luckily I was home and I persisted that they install a new header, and after a while they finally realized that they needed to do it as well. They went off to the store to get the wood and the drywall and finished the job, which looked fine. 2. Only a few months later big cracks appeared along the new header. I called Northshield only to be told by Alex that my painter should've known that the patchwork on the header was very minimal and that "any professional painter should've known to make sure the drywall was ready to be painted." So they refused to do anything about it. I guess I should've said back to him "any professional installer should've known you need a new header when you widen a doorway!" So now I have a wall that I will need to re-patch and re-paint all over again. If you decide to use Northshield, please do your own research and make sure that you oversee their work, because they will never take responsibility for it, or admit that they didn't know what the heck they were doing.

Professional, clean, good customer service. Fast and efficient. No surprises or hidden costs, did not try to upsell me and worked within my budget. Very happy with the finished product and will continue to use in the future for replacing my remaining windows.
