Upgrading Drafty Aluminum Windows in Winnipeg

A Winnipeg home built around 1965 had old aluminum windows replaced after the homeowner felt significant cold coming through the units, with new casement, fixed, sliding and single-hung styles selected for comfort, airflow and a uniform exterior look.

Project Overview

This project was completed for a Winnipeg, Manitoba home built around 1965. The home’s windows had previously been replaced in the 1980s with aluminum units, but over time the homeowner could feel a lot of cold coming through the windows.

The goal was to replace the uncomfortable aluminum windows with a more efficient and practical window package. For similar older homes, a well-planned window upgrade in Winnipeg can improve comfort while keeping the exterior style consistent from the front of the home to the back.

Our Solution

NorthShield used a combination of casement windows, fixed windows, sliding windows and single-hung windows for this project. At the front of the house, casement windows were selected to create a more uniform appearance and provide strong operation and sealing.

For the back of the home, sliding windows were used where convenience and easy operation were the priorities. The window configuration also included a quarter-half-quarter style, giving the homeowner maximum glass area in the centre of the window with larger openings on each side for airflow. This kind of planning helps balance ventilation, natural light and appearance. Homeowners comparing styles can learn more in NorthShield’s guide to casement versus double-hung windows.

Installation Details

The replacement addressed windows that felt very cold and no longer matched the comfort expectations of the home. By moving away from the older aluminum units, the homeowner received a more efficient window package with styles selected for each part of the house.

The finished project gave the front elevation a cleaner, more consistent look while improving the convenience of the back windows. For Winnipeg homes with cold, drafty or outdated window units, NorthShield’s guide to stopping window drafts explains why both product choice and proper installation matter.

This Winnipeg project replaced cold aluminum windows from the 1980s with a practical mix of casement, fixed, sliding and single-hung windows for better comfort, airflow and exterior consistency.
