Project Overview
NorthShield recently completed a window and door replacement project in Calgary for a local homeowner. The home was built in 1975 and still had a large front window that was fixed in place. While the existing window was still in reasonable condition, it could not be opened, which limited airflow and natural circulation through the front of the home.
The homeowner wanted a practical upgrade that would improve ventilation without sacrificing the bright front window appearance. As part of the same project, the front entry door system was also replaced with a clean, modern design.
Existing Window and Door Concerns
The main concern was the front window. The previous window provided plenty of glass area, but because it was a fixed unit, the homeowner could not use it for fresh air. This made the front room less comfortable during warmer weather and limited cross-breeze through the home.
The existing entry system was also ready for an update. The homeowner wanted a straightforward modern front entry door style with glass at the top, along with a storm door to add protection from the elements and an extra layer of security.
Our Solution
NorthShield replaced the large fixed front window with a new combination replacement window designed for both airflow and curb appeal. The new unit uses a quarter-half-quarter layout, with operable casement window sections on each side and a larger stationary centre section to preserve maximum glass area. This gives the homeowner fresh-air ventilation from both sides while keeping the clean look of a wide front window.
For the entry system, the homeowner selected a Sydney panel replacement door with clear glass at the top. A storm door was installed over the new front door to improve everyday comfort, help shield the entry from weather, and provide additional security. The work was completed by a two-person crew in about half a day.
Installation Process
The crew removed the existing large fixed front window and prepared the opening for the new combination unit. The replacement window was installed, insulated, and sealed to help provide reliable performance through Calgary weather conditions.
The front door system was also replaced during the same visit. The new Sydney panel door and storm door were installed and adjusted so the entry operated smoothly and provided a clean finished look from both inside and outside the home.
